First steps. Syma X12S

As I commented in previous post, my first contact with quadcopters was accidentally. In Kings Day I received a very little toy, Syma X12S, as a gift. It was the beginning and my first steps in the hobby.

Some time later, after get considerable experience and many more flights done, I must say you I began with one of most recommendable quadcopter to begin with, maybe the best. It’s obviously a quadcopter to fly inside because of his size, but I am also sure that it’s the best way to begin, flying inside. Why? You would flight in a “very controlled area” and always with a close view of the quad.

Obviously, you will be crashing time after time, but these accidents will be not so severe for the little toy as in outside location would be.

Currently it’s very common to find a large list of microquads close to this Syma X12S, and I pretty sure that so much of these are very good to flight, but I am talking about my experience. Trust me if I tell you that choose this quad will be a sure buy. Furthermore, during the writing of this post, X12S could be found around 12 to 25$.

Features

Taking into account Syma is a basic quad, I would say it doesn't have very special skills but do what it must to do great.

I like

Size. very tiny drone but also very handable.

Strength. Relatively strong against typical impacts.

Stability. Very stable in flight so it's quite easy to control.

Flight modes. You could change between three different flight modes from slowest to fastest. I recommend the slowest one to flight especially if you are beginner.

In the air. Easy two know the quad position. There are two lights in the front (red) and two more in the rear (green), very helpful to know where the front is.

TX. RC transmitter is very ergonomic and bigger than the one included in the other quads of these category.

Spare parts. Easy to find and cheap. Also easy to repair.

I don´t like

Durability. As in almost all cheap quads, the drone parts are not durable, but is so easy to find spare parts.
Batteries could seem to be not available but it’s easy to solve. Syma X12S uses same batteries than Cheerson CX-10. You could find it with no problem and are one of the cheapest.

Batteries. Following with battery topic, are not interchangeable but, in the moment you must change it (you will do it for sure) it’s than easy to remove 4 screw, old battery and solder the new one. Not more than 5 minutes.

Protectors. Propeller protectors are very weak and usually get trapped in curtains, furniture, etc. As easy to remove it cutting in the root. Very recommendable to remove it first, all rotors will be broken with or without crashes.

Lights position. Finally, as a personal opinion, a would prefer to switch lights position. I mean, it’s much common to find green leds in the front of the vehicles and red ones in the back.

Will update soon with new post, photos and reviews.

See you soon.

Thanks!

RCX ZMR 1804 2400KV Brushless Motors

To my first review it’s fair to beggin with the very first motor that I use in my first DIY drone, RCX ZMR 1804 2400KV. I set it in f250 glass fiber quad. In fist lookup RCX are small and light motors but powerfull anyway. Exactly 13.4g, so perfect to set and don’t be worried about the weight. Furthermore, it’s diameter only 23mm, 5mm in axis. Theoretically, provide 2400KV and may set with 2S (7.4V) or 3S (11.1V) batteries so discard mounting with 4S batteries, are not allowed, looking in datasheets. Package include M2 screws to fix the motors in the frame. Also, one nut per motor to set the propellers. Could be found in CW (Clock Wise) and CCW (Counter Clock Wise) but, to be honest, I have never found CW model. It’s could a problem using nut provided in the package, because tend to unscrew. Also, screws are quite short and should be re-screw almost before every flight. Both issues could be easily solved. Setting few larger M2 screws, cheap and common, let you ...

Adding external DVR to FPV goggles

Being FPV lovers as we are, FDFlyers team know how only a small group of lucky people could have a Fatshark FPV goggles. Keeping in mind cost, you should valuate pros and cons a lot before purchase it.  Therefore, we love to get you cheaper alternatives to fly FPV, improving our basic goggles performance. So, we are going to introduce you how we join VR-007 Eachine goggles to Eachine ProDVR. Note that other alternatives are also valid to do it but we really feel this is one of the better one. VR-007 are used by our side some time ago and it works really acceptable, despite of his price. Obviously “premium” skills are not included (DVR, diversity…), and this is the main reason to set some improvements. This way these basic goggles would be stepping up to next level. What DVR is? DVR means, literally, Digital Video Recorder. It’s a very simple box capable to record digital videos. To our interest, very useful video recorder, directly from FPV camera. There are two ma...

Racerstar BR2205. Maybe the best low-cost racing motors

Looking back, in previous post, we were discussing about another low-cost brushless motor with great cost-benefit, RCX1804. Following with this premise, we are going to annalize perhaps the next step to our quads. Obviously, RCX are great motors to begin with, but you will like to improve the time you get more experience flying. So, it's natural to look for powerful motors to get faster flights. Racerstar BR2205 2300kv Taking this into account, we are going to introduce you the BR2205.  Once they have been tested, we can conclude are awesome motors to going faster. Those racing motors allow to save a considerable amount money without renounce to have a good performance.  Same brand offer two diverse power options: 2300kv and 2600kv. First one are the most extended and my recommendation, being so much easier to find. In terms of prices you could find it around 38/40€ in Europe and 28/30€ in China. Each motor is delivered in it's own red ...
